2010 EVENTS ALONG THE GREENWAY 


*There is no charge for any of our events, unless specified.

*The pace is slow for walks to allow for pointing out the sights and for explanation and discussion.  It is usually less than one mile per hour.  The  terrain is gentle, unless   specifically mentioned. Most walks run between one and two hours, but you are free to leave at any time.

*If you have an organization that would like a special walk, send us an e-mail and we will do our best to accommodate you.

*Board meetings are open to our members.  We meet at the Rodda Center on the third Thursday of each month at 7:30 PM, unless otherwise specified. If you plan to attend, please e-mail the president.

September
Tuesday, September 14, 10:00 a.m., Andreas Park to the trail at FDU.  We will follow the Greenway along Indian Pond into the Andreas trail past Wendel Stream and connect with the trail through FDU.  We will end at the walking bridge leading to FDU's Hackensack campus.  Our leader will be Jordan Wouk, Chair of the Hackensack River Greenway Advisory Board and past president of Friends of the Greenway.  We will meet in the parking lot of Andreas Park near the tennis court.

Thursday, September 16, 7:30 p.m.,  Board Meeting.

Saturday, September 25, 10:00 a.m., New Milford Greenway.  Join Mike Trepicchio, Chairman of Historic New Bridge Landing and member of Friends of the Greenway, on a walk through the New Milford Greenway.  Many people have advocated connecting the Greenways of the towns along the river.  Meet at the beginning of the New Milford Greenway.

Sunday, September 26, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Hackensack Riverkeeper cleanup of Brett Park.  Join Bill Shehan, the Riverkeeper crew and their dedicated volunteers as they come to lower Brett Park to remove garbage from in and around the river.  They
work on foot to clear trash and other debris from the banks of the river as well as pulling trash out of the river from canoes. Hackensack Riverkeeper provides all the canoes, PFDs (personal flotation devices), paddles, hip waders, garbage bags, gloves, pickup sticks, meals and refreshments that you will need to get the job done. Just be sure to wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Saturday, October 2, 10:00 to noon, Cleanup of Indian Pond in Andreas Park. This activity is part of a grant that the Township received from the New Jersey office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to clear invasive species and plant native species along the river.  Brian Marsh, a Private Lands Biologist who works for the Service has led us in this project.  We will be removing invasives to ensure that the native species that we have planted will have room to grow.  Bring gloves and shovels. Meet in the parking lot of Andreas Park. 
 
Sunday October 3, 10:00 a.m., Teaneck Creek Conservancy.  George Reskakis, the leader of this walk, is Chair of Teaneck Parks, Playgrounds, and Recreation Advisory Board and an active participant in the building of the trails of the Hackensack River Greenway Through Teaneck and the Teaneck Creek Conservancy. He is on the Boards of Friends and the Teaneck Creek Conservancy.  We will walk through the wonderful natural woodland that makes up the Conservancy, view Teaneck Creek, and walk through the Turtle Labyrinth.  Meet in the parking lot of the Puffin Foundation at the bottom of Puffin Way (off of Teaneck Road).  This event is co-sponsored by Friends and the Teaneck Creek Conservancy. 

Sunday, October 10, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m., Guided children’s walk around Indian Pond in Andreas Park  Bring your children to a walk especially designed for children ages 6 through 12.  The walk will be lead by Louis Osman, President of Friends of the Greenway.  Louis will have pictures of native animals and plants, and children will be encouraged to find these species.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  Bring a pair of binoculars if you have them.  Meet in the parking lot of Andreas Park next to the tennis court.


Sunday, October 17, 9:00 a.m., Join Kathy and Jordan Wouk for their annual long walk of the entire 3.5 miles of Teaneck’s Greenway  See the river in all its glory as you walk through parks and residential neighborhoods.  The walk will start at the southern end of Terhune Park.  If possible, try to have a car waiting for you at the end of the walk.  If not, we will get you back to your car parked near the beginning of the walk.


Sunday, October 24, 10:00 a.m., Riverside County Park (adjacent to Riverside Square). Join Louis Osman, President of Friends of the Greenway, for a walk through Riverside County Park.  When we walk along the Teaneck Greenway in Andreas Park we look across the river at this park with its bird blinds and growth of phragmites.  Bergen County is proposing changes to the trail in this park, but not everyone agrees on what changes should be made. Come see what it looks like up close and personal.  From Route 4 get off at the first exit Hackensack Avenue, go to the and make your first right into the underground parking lot.  Park in the rear part of the parking lot next to the trail and meet by the flag pole at the entrance to the park.

Locations

1. Southern Entrance to Terhune Park
View Map  At the southern end of Terhune Park, on River Road, at the foot of Hillcrest Street, about 100 feet before the Bogota border.  There is a Greenway entrance sign on the river side of River Road right at the entrance.

2. Andreas Park parking lot   
View Map  Near the tennis court in Andreas Park, off River Road.  The entrance to the park is at the foot of Grenville Avenue, one block south of West Englewood Avenue.

3. Swing bridge in northwest corner of Brett Park

Driving north on River Road, Brett Park is the last park on your left.  Riverview Avenue is the street at the end of the park.  Where the road splits, bear to the left.  Stop before you come the barriers blocking vehicular access to the swing bridge.

4. Pomander Walk near the river    
View Map  Driving south on River Road, one block past Cedar Lane, turn right onto Pomander Walk.  The starting point is at the end of the street on the left.

5.  Hackensack River County Park
View Map Take Route 4 west from Teaneck. Just after the Mobil station turn right into Riverside Square Mall. Make your first right down the ramp. Continue as ramp curves left. At stop sign turn right and go to end. Turn left. Go to grayish brick wall. You will see a flag pole on the right. We will meet near the flag pole, at the observation deck.

6. South end of New Milford Greenway

Take River Road make a U-turn on New Bridge Road.  After U-turn, pass light on River Road and continue west on New Bridge Road. Make right on Lynwood Ave (the last right before coming to the bridge), then the first left on Arlington Avenue.

7.
Puffin Way (formerly known as Oakdene Avenue)
View Map Take Teaneck Road south and make a left turn onto Puffin Way, entering the parking lot of the Puffin Foundation.

8. Mill Creek Marsh Trail
View Map Take the western spur of the Turnpike. Exit at 16W. After tolls merge onto service road & Rte 3 eastbound. After crossing the Hackensack River  stay in the right lane on Rte. 3.  After passing the Shell gas station, follow the exit for: SECAUCUS - NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE - EXIT ONLY. You are now on the service road that parallels Route 3.  Go PAST the ramp for the Turnpike and exit the service road at the sign for:
HARMON MEADOW BLVD. - THE PLAZA - THE MALL AT MILL CREEK
Follow the exit ramp onto Harmon Meadow Blvd. and take it past “The Plaza,” through one traffic light to the next light at Wal-Mart/Sam's Club.
Turn LEFT at the Wal-Mart traffic light onto Mill Creek Drive and you will soon see the Mill Creek Marsh on your right.  Make the first RIGHT
(by Stop and Shop), go straight and park by the trailhead and the sign for: MILL CREEK TRAIL.
